Statistics - Edexcel GCSE Higher Maths

Part of the 12-18% shared with Probability · Spec 1MA1

Statistics shares 12 to 18 per cent of the Higher marks with probability on Edexcel 1MA1, and it is the strand with the best return per hour of revision. The methods are short and repeat every series: read a value off a cumulative frequency graph, find an interquartile range, work out a frequency density, estimate a mean from grouped data.

Because the calculations are quick, Edexcel loads the marks onto interpretation. Questions ask you to compare two distributions, and the mark scheme wants one comparison of average and one of spread, each quoting a figure and each written in the context of the data. A comparison that says one group is 'better' without naming a median or an interquartile range scores nothing.
