Ratio, proportion and rates of change carries 17 to 23 per cent of the Higher marks on Edexcel 1MA1, and it is the area that turns up inside other questions more than any other. A trigonometry question may hand you the angles as a ratio; a volume question may give the density; a probability question may describe the contents of a bag as a ratio rather than as counts.
Edexcel writes most of this strand in context: prices, recipes, speeds, populations, currency. The maths in each question is short, and the marks usually turn on reading the sentence correctly, in particular on spotting whether the number you have been given is a part, a whole, or a difference. Reverse percentage questions are the clearest example, because dividing by the multiplier and multiplying by it look almost the same on paper and produce different answers.
