Probability - Edexcel GCSE Higher Maths

Part of the 12-18% shared with Statistics · Spec 1MA1

Probability and statistics together carry 12 to 18 per cent of the Higher marks on Edexcel 1MA1. Probability's share is usually one longer question plus a shorter one, and at Higher tier the longer question almost always involves selection without replacement, which is where conditional probability lives.

Edexcel favours tree diagrams, Venn diagrams and two-way tables as the structure for these questions, and marks the structure as well as the answer. A tree with correct second-stage denominators earns method marks even when the final multiplication goes wrong, so drawing the diagram is worth doing before you reach for a calculator.
