Algebra - Edexcel GCSE Higher Maths

≈30% of Higher paper marks · Spec 1MA1

Algebra is the largest strand on Edexcel GCSE Higher Maths (spec 1MA1), worth roughly 30% of the marks across the three 80-mark papers, more than any other content area. It runs from manipulating expressions and solving equations through to sequences, graphs, inequalities and algebraic proof.

Edexcel spreads algebra across every paper rather than concentrating it: expect quick 1-2 mark simplification questions early in a paper, structured 3-5 mark equation-solving in the middle, and multi-step problems late on that combine algebra with graphs or geometry. Paper 1 is non-calculator, so exact fraction and surd answers are routinely required.
